DUBROVNIK, Dec 3 (Hina) - Commenting on the provisional release of Croatian generals Ivan Markac and Mladen Cermak, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Friday the ICTY decision to release the two generals pending trial was expected.

"They (Markac and Cermak) showed up in court after being summoned, they did not question the jurisdiction of the Hague tribunal with a single gesture, namely they recognised the institution, so their provisional release was a logical step," Mesic said in the southern Adriatic town of Dubrovnik where he took part in the opening of the 33rd general assembly of the European Olympic Committees.

Commenting on the request Croatia forwarded to the international community seeking help in the solving of the case of fugitive general Ante Gotovina, Mesic said: "We start from the fact that Gotovina deserves credit for the defence of Croatia and nobody is bringing that into question. But the Hague tribunal also has questions which must be answered -- about certain events during the war -- and only he (Gotovina) can answer them. This is why we still expect his advisors to realise the seriousness of the situation Gotovina is in and the situation Croatia is in and that they will advise him to surrender to the Hague tribunal," Mesic said.
