SARAJEVO, Dec 2 (Hina) - The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Carla del Ponte, has confirmed her readiness to refer seven war crimes cases to the Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Among them are also cases of the accused already in the tribunal's custody, del Ponte told reporters in Sarajevo on Thursday during a visit to the Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina, whose War Crimes Department is preparing to take over the first cases already in January next year.

Del Ponte, who arrived in Bosnia on Thursday for a two-day visit, said that the tribunal would continue providing all the necessary support to the Bosnian judiciary to ensure that domestic judges and prosecutors could gradually take over war crimes trials.

That will be a very important moment, because it will be an important factor for promoting reconciliation in the country, she said.

Del Ponte is scheduled to attend a session of the Peace Implementation Council in Sarajevo on Friday, and to meet NATO and EUFOR officials.

Before her visit, the chief prosecutor criticised NATO for the alleged lack of political will to arrest the two most wanted indictees, Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic and military commander Ratko Mladic.

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who was present at the formal handover of command from the NATO-led peacekeeping force SFOR to the EU force EUFOR in Sarajevo on Thursday, rejected del Ponte's allegations, saying that such remarks were not helpful and would not contribute to the efforts to arrest the indicted war criminals.

Del Ponte declined to respond to journalists' questions on Thursday and just said that she was impatient to see what High Representative Paddy Ashdown would do to ensure that action was taken to arrest the fugitives.

Ashdown, who accompanied the chief prosecutor during her visit to the court, said there was no doubt that the fundamental responsibility for the obstruction of efforts to arrest the indictees lay with the Bosnian Serb army and police.

The Army and the Interior Ministry of Republika Srpska are systematically obstructing the efforts, which del Ponte has reported to the UN Security Council, Ashdown said.

Ashdown said that now it was clear that the Bosnian Serb army had been pretending for years to be looking for Mladic, while in fact it had been protecting and helping him.
