ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - Zeljko Sacic, a former Croatian assistant justice minister who during the war in Croatia was a deputy commander of special police units, confirmed on Thursday that he would be interviewed by investigators of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in January as a suspect an investigation into the 1995 Croatian operation "Storm".

"Today I received an official summons from chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte requesting an interview with me as a suspect some time in January," Sacic told Hina on the phone.

The interview is connected with allegations from the indictments against generals Ante Gotovina, Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac, he said.

Sacic said that he would respond to the summons and that he did not consider his role in "Storm" questionable.

"My role is undisputed and I consider myself innocent with regard to possible incrimination," said Sacic, who had already been interviewed by ICTY investigators as a witness in mid 2002.

Generals Gotovina, Cermak and Markac are charged in two separate indictments with crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war committed against Serb civilians in the course of and after the 1995 Operation "Storm".

They are charged with taking part in a joint criminal enterprise the purpose of which was to forcibly and permanently remove Serb population from the region of Krajina.

Sacic said that he would be accompanied by his attorney Ivo Farcic, who is also one of Gotovina's attorneys.

Farcic said that the probable topic of the interview would be Sacic's role in Operation "Storm", that is, a period covering the crucial 20-30 days after August 5, 1995, when the operation started.

Asked if the interview could result in the issuing of an indictment, Farcic said that it could, but added that this would not be in line with the tribunal's exit strategy.

The strategy envisages wrapping up all investigations and issuing indictments by the end of this year, after which the tribunal would focus on the already initiated proceedings.

The spokeswoman for the tribunal's chief prosecutor, Florence Hartmann, told Hina that she could not comment on the summons, but stressed that all investigations would be completed by the end of the year and that there would be no new investigations referring to Croatia.

Asked why Sacic was summonsed for an interview in January 2005 as a suspect if all investigations were expected to be completed by the end of this year, Hartmann said that technically this did not mean anything because the suspect was not an indictee of the Hague tribunal.

Hartmann said she presumed that the interview was related to other trials.

Confirming the summons, Croatian Assistant Justice Minister Jaksa Muljacic categorically dismissed the possibility of Sacic or some other Croatian official being indicted by the tribunal.
