ZAGREB, Nov 30 (Hina) - Croatian Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic and British Defence Secretary Geoffrey Hoon held talks in Zagreb on Tuesday, and on that occasion the British official expressed full support to Croatia in its efforts to enter NATO and the European Union.

"Great Britain will offer full support to Croatia's admission to NATO. This is a strong encouragement to our ambitions regarding the EuroAtlantic integration," Roncevic said at a news conference after the talks.

Hoon said that Great Britain saw Croatia as a member of the EU and NATO.

"This government and this ministry are ready to accept that challenge and a wide-open door policy, and meet all expectations and commitments which are part of criteria for the admission to the said organisations," the Croatian minister said. He also thanked Hoon and the entire British government for support they were giving to Croatia.

Hoon spoke of the importance of cooperation with the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal in the context of efforts to join the European bloc and the alliance.

"It is important that the report that was produced by Chief Prosecutor Del Ponte is acted upon and that we see full cooperation," and that those who have been indicted are sent to The Hague, the British Defence Secretary said.

Asked by reporters whether there is a possibility that his country might block the setting of a date for the start of entry talks with Croatia, Hoon said that this was "a question that we can leave to 17 December," when the EU summit is scheduled to be held in Brussels.

He is however confident that "we will get the cooperation from Croatia".

Asked whether the international community is investing any efforts to locate and arrest the runaway Croatian General Ante Gotovina, who also holds EU citizenship, Hoon said that international efforts should be made and that European countries would offer some help in that.

"But it is also important that Croatia makes the maximum efforts to ensure that those indictments are carried through" he said commenting on efforts to arrest Gotovina.

Roncevic also informed his guest of the reform in the defence and security sector and of the situation in the region, which Hoon welcomed.

Roncevic highlighted the importance of training of Croatian officers at prestigious British military academies.

Asked whether they had discussed a possibility of sending Croatian troops in Iraq, Roncevic reiterated that the position of the Croatian government and other political factors was that Croatia would not militarily intervene in that country.

Regarding Iraq, Hoon said thar it was most important that the international community would be engaged in restoring the country and making preparations for free elections.
