ZAGREB, Nov 16 (Hina) - Croatia can be optimistic about the decision on the start of EU entry talks which the European Council is expected to adopt at the coming summit in December, but it must continue to work on meeting conditions for EU membership, Guenter Gloser said in Zagreb on Tuesday.

Gloser is the spokesman for Germany's Social Democratic Party (SDP) club of deputies for European policy issues and a representative in the Bundestag.

"I am confident that Croatia can be optimistic about the EU decision on the start of negotiations, but it needs to continue to make effort so as to meet its obligations," he told reporters.

A delegation of the SDP club of deputies in Bundestag, led by Gloser, is on two-day visit to Croatia as part of regular parliamentary cooperation and the objective of their visit is to see Croatia's progress in the process of associating with the EU.

Croatia made great progress on the path of drawing closer to the EU and progress was made in many areas, Gloser said and added that there were still issues Croatia needed to work on. He stressed his country's full support to Croatia on that path.

Speaking about the situation in the region and the importance of regional cooperation, Gloser said Croatia was a role model to its neighbours and added that it could be their lighthouse on the path to Europe.

Asked if Ljubljana could slow down the process of Croatia's joining the EU given the border incidents during the recent election campaign in Slovenia, German deputies answered in the negative and added that the European Union would help the two countries to solve their problems as fast and as good as possible.

On the first day of their visit to Croatia -- Monday -- the German delegation met Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and parliamentary deputies of the Croatian Social Democratic Party and other parliamentary parties,

On Wednesday, they are scheduled to meet Croatian Foreign Ministry State Secretary Hido Biscevic and European Integration Ministry State Secretary Marija Pejcevic Buric,

The talks focused on Croatia's EU candidacy and the country's negotiations with the European Commission, reforms Croatia was implementing on its path to the EU, the adoption of EU standards, Croatia's standpoints on EU foreign, security and defence policy, Croatia's view of the European Constitution, Croatia-Germany relations, political, economic and social situation and problems of minorities in Croatia.
