SPLIT, Nov 15 (Hina) - Defence Day of the City of Split and Split Dalmatia County as well as the victory over the then Yugoslav People's Navy and the 13 anniversary of breaking through the military blockade of the Adriatic was marked by laying wreaths in the Split City Port on Monday.

Tributes were paid to all Croatian sailors and members of the Croatian Navy who died in the war for Croatia's independence.

At a ceremony organised by the association of volunteers of the Croatian Navy, a Deputy Prime Minister and War veterans Minister, Jadranka Kosor threw a wreath in the sea in tribute to all those who gave their lives for Croatia's independence.

She stressed that the wreath-laying ceremony was "a symbolic act of our common struggle aimed at not letting our past fall into oblivion"

"By taking part in such commemorative ceremonies for Croatian soldiers we are leaving legacy for the future, because if we forget everything that happened in Croatia's recent history we would not stand too much chance in the future either," Kosor said.

"Croatia has the EU candidate status and is waiting to enter negotiations with the EU and this is why we must not forget these people because if it wasn't for them Croatia would not have its freedom," Kosor said.
