SARAJEVO, Nov 20 (Hina) - The police of Bosnia's Croat-Muslim entity have arrested a Pakistani national suspected of threatening international prosecutors in Bosnia-Herzegovina who are investigating persons connected with organised crime and corruption, Bosnian dailies reported on Saturday.

According to Dnevni Avaz and Oslobodjenje dailies, the Pakistani, named Ahmed Istikhar, was arrested in the central town of Zenica on Thursday and immediately transferred to a prison outside Sarajevo.

The police revealed only the suspect's initials stating that he was suspected on threatening the head of the State Prosecution of Bosnia-Herzegovina department for organised and white-collar crime and corruption, John McNair of Canada, and a prosecutor at the department, Jonathan Schmidt of the United States.

Prosecutor Ahmet Halebic, who questioned the suspect on Friday, confirmed this in a statement to "Nezavisne novine". "I can confirm that the Pakistani has been arrested, questioned and that month-long detention has been requested. We are connecting him with the threats directed against prosecutors of the State Prosecution of Bosnia-Herzegovina".

Earlier this week, prosecutor McNair confirmed the existence of threats, adding that they were very serious.

The US authorities have advised prosecutor Schmidt, who is visiting his family in the United States, not to return to Bosnia-Herzegovina for the time being.

Police spokesman Robert Cvrtko said that the Pakistani national was also suspected of involvement in people trafficking. He allegedly participated in the transfer of foreign nationals to western Europe via Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Dnevni Avaz reports that Istikhar probably also helped persons who threatened the international prosecutors enter Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Oslobodjenje reports that it still not clear if Istikhar himself was a member of the group of conspirators or only helped them obtain documents necessary to enter the country.

The Pakistani Embassy in the country did not have any comment on the arrest of the Pakistani national.

According to the media, Istikhar arrived in Bosnia in 1998 and took up residence in Zenica where he married a local, Edina Podrug. He is a history professor and owns an export-import company in Lukovo Polje.

He reportedly already received a suspended sentence in Sarajevo in 2002 for forging documents. His attorney Almin Dautbegovic dismissed police accusations, particularly those referring to the threats.

The only concrete act with which Istikhar is charged is the sale of a Schengen visa for 150 convertible marks, Dautbegovic said.
