ZAGREB, Oct 26 (Hina) - The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSSH) will not agree to Croatian workers paying the price of fast admission to the European Union, and will make efforts to prevent this through active participation in the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), which gathers 60 million workers, SSSH leader Vesna Dejanovic said in Zagreb on Tuesday.

ETUC president John Monks, whose confederation was joined by the SSSH in mid-October, said he came to Croatia to become acquainted with the federation's work and inform the government and public about what ETUC membership meant.

He added that Croatia did not have much time for adjusting its legislation to EU standards because it started the adjustment process with a delay, but that an important role in that process had to be played by trade unions.

Monks expressed satisfaction with the SSSH's work and scope of activities, stressing that the biggest Croatian union federation would as of now be involved in all ETUC activities on an equal basis.

Trade unions in the EU have an important role, especially in the establishment of social dialogue, but they also make efforts to influence the EU's legislation and its overall policy.
