ZAGREB, Oct 12 (Hina) - Southeast European countries are placing
great hopes in the European Union which should solve all of their problems,
Austrian news agency APA cited an assessment from the book by former Swiss
Ambassador to Croatia Paul Widmer entitled "The Time of Great Changes in
Croatia" (unofficial translation).Widmer was Switzerland's Ambassador to Zagreb between 1999 and 2003, the
agency said and added that great changes took part in Croatia in the meantime.
APA said that after making first steps towards the EU under the leadership of
Social Democrat Ivica Racan, Zagreb today was knocking on the EU's doors under
the leadership of the current Prime Minister Ivo Sanader.
The Balkans in general invests great hopes in the EU, Widmer said in his
book recently published by NZZ Verlag.
Without prospects of joining the EU, southeast European countries would
be reluctant to implement reforms, Widmer said in his book.
