"Independence Day commemorates a crucial decision which ended a long chapter in our history.
"On October 8, 1991 the Croatian parliament expressed the unanimous stand and expectations of its people, severing ties with the former state whose form and importance had become unacceptable not only to the Croatian people, but to most other peoples.
"Thanks to the sacrifice and courage of our soldiers and people, we have a state which we are building on the basis of freedom, democracy, peace, the rule of law and respect for human and minority rights.
"The international position of our country today is unquestionable, and Croatia has embarked on the road to Europe," reads the message.
