Independence Day commemorates the watershed decision of the Croatian parliament of 13 years ago to sever constitutional ties with the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which helped Croatia embark on the road to independence, reads the message.
The aggression against Croatia was aimed at breaking the will of Croatian citizens to live in an independent and free state. It was with great sacrifices, the courage of soldiers and the persistence of all citizens that Croatia won the war and created conditions for independent development and a democratic society, the president said.
"Our independence today is unquestionable, and our status in the international community and international relations is stable and solid".
Croatia is a candidate for membership in the European Union and nobody wants to place obstacles or slow it down on its road if it consistently meets all requirements, Mesic said.
"Our homeland is an important factor and guarantor of security in the region. We are active participants in the work of the United Nations and other international organisations. Croatia is pursuing the policy of peace and good neighbourly cooperation and actively participates in the international anti-terrorist coalition within the scope of its capabilities," President Mesic said in the message among other things.
