ZAGREB, Sept 20 (Hina) - The trade union of workers in the Croatian
textile, leather, foot-wear and rubber industries has asked for the resignation
of Economy Minister Branko Vukelic and the State Secretary in that ministry,
Vladimir Vrankovic, over the alarming situation in this sector.Addressing a news conference in Zagreb on Monday, the union's leader,
Josip Zidanic, accused the authorities of shunning social dialogue.
Zidanic said that 3,750 employees in this sector had been sacked over
the last year, and wages dropped by six percent. At the same time, the import
of clothing saw an increase.
The average monthly wage for textile workers is between 1,570 and 1,650
kuna, he added.
There are currently 54,000 workers in the textile and footwear
sector.
