ZAGREB, Sept 27 (Hina) - Parliament President and Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) Presidency member Vladimir Seks said on Monday that December 19 was one of the likeliest dates for presidential elections and that the HDZ candidate would be revealed in early or mid-October.

"The election will be neither on Christmas nor on New Year's Day. One of the likeliest dates is December 19," he told Croatian Radio.

He added the dates of presidential elections were strictly defined by the Constitution and that the ballot would be called and held within the constitutional deadline.

Seks said the ruling HDZ would have a presidential candidate and that the final decision on who it would be would be made by the party's presidency in consultation with the party's central and national councils.

In a week or two, the HDZ National Council is expected to nominate two candidates based on the results of a recent party membership poll and the evaluation of the party leadership as to who is the best candidate, said Seks.

He added the poll, covering 3,000 HDZ members, was not finished and that its objective was not to establish who the presidential candidate ought to be or determine someone's popularity but to see what the HDZ presidential candidate should be like.

Seks once again dismissed accusations that the Parliament Presidency had been putting pressure on the HRT national television network, saying the Presidency only complained due to the marginalisation of Parliament's work in prime time newscasts, which he said ignored important events relating to himself and the Parliament Presidency.
