ZAGREB, Sept 26 (Hina) - A two-day conference called "The Future of Southeast Europe: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro, and the Prospect of Euro-Atlantic Integration", wrapped up in Zagreb on Sunday with the adoption of the final declaration which reads that "since the democratic changes in the said countries, headway has been made in the normalisation of inter-state and other relations, but much more could have been done and there is still a considerable number of unsettled issues".

Participants in the conference agree that it is necessary to solve several problems so as to accelerate the restoration of confidence and understanding among peoples of the three countries and step up their association with Euro-Atlantic institutions.

The declaration underlines the importance of the readiness to openly see all aspects of one's own past and fully cooperate with the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal.

The document also pointed out the importance of settling border problems through agreements and taking some measures which may in the meantime render the life of people in border areas easier.

In this context, the governments of Serbia-Montenegro and Croatia are advised to regulate cross-border traffic so as to enable citizens of Sarengrad (Croatia) to use freely the Sarengrad islet on the Danube and citizens of Vizic and Nestin (Serbia-Montenegro) to have unhindered communication with the town of Backa Palanka.

The participants in the conference also urge the creation of "material, institutional and political conditions for the return and reintegration of the displaced and refugees, which is one of ways for the efficient removal of the consequences of thee wars and ethnic cleansing".

Members of the Igman Initiative, an international coordinating body of nongovernmental organisations which was an organiser of the Zagreb event, announced their intention to urge international foundations to establish funds for the removal of war consequences.

The Igman Initiative's members also thanked Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and the Bosnian Presidency chairman, Sulejman Tihic, who attended the conference, for their support to this event. Serbia-Montenegro President Svetozar Marovic, although announced, was unable to attend due to unplanned commitments.

The two-day conference at which Mesic and Tihic delivered speeches yesterday, was organised by the Civic Human Rights Committee in Croatia known as GOLJP and the Igman Initiative.
