"This is a very serious moment, but in any case, our diplomatic activity will be guided by the wish to defuse tensions and avoid the trap of frustrating the EU with some Croatian-Slovene issues," Biscevic said after an extraordinary session of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, which convened over yesterday's arrest of 12 Slovenes who illegally crossed the border and refused to identify themselves to Croatian police.
Biscevic added activities would also focus on reinforcing Croatia's international position in a way that would make the EU reach a positive decision on the start of Croatia's entry negotiations.
Biscevic said he was pleased the Committee on Foreign Affairs supported the Foreign Ministry's position which he added "will certainly be understood in the EU because it's absolutely unacceptable and without precedent to use the EU member status as a means of exerting pressure on a neighbouring country for the purpose of winning more favourable solutions in some outstanding bilateral issues".
