ZAGREB, Sept 15 (Hina) - The number of casualties in traffic
accidents in July, August and September this year has dropped by 70 persons in
relation to the same period last year, Interior Minister Marijan Mlinaric on
Wednesday told MPs who warned about the dissatisfaction of restaurant owners
and wine producers with the new Law on Traffic Safety banning the least amount
of alcohol in a driver's blood. The minister presented a set of data to confirm his claim that the new
law was already yielding positive results.
Since 20 August, when the law went into force, 329 inebriated drivers
have been involved in traffic accidents, which is a 56 percent drop in relation
to the same period last year, when 776 such drivers participated in traffic
accidents, Mlinaric said.
The number of traffic accidents in August this year was by 23 percent
lower than last August.
Commenting on claims that the law had negative effects on tourism,
Mlinaric said that such a ban had been in force for 15 years in Hungary, a
country with developed tourist and restaurant sectors.
