SPLIT, Sept 3 (Hina) - The Ministry of the Sea, Tourism, Transport and Development organised a debate on a draft maritime code in Split on Friday, which brought together prominent Croatian scientists, experts in international maritime law, representatives of seven government ministries and Fishermen's Guild leaders.

State Secretary for the Sea Branko Bacic told reporters after the debate that all participants supported the government and encouraged it to adhere to its decision proclaiming the ecological and fisheries protection zone in the Adriatic Sea, which is due to enter into force on October 3 this year.

Speakers put forward a number of proposals regarding sea border delimitation, the possibility of the ecological and fisheries protection zone becoming an exclusive economic zone, and the adoption of an effective maritime code to protect the sea and the sea bed ecologically and archeologically and to protect the fish stocks in the Adriatic.

The conclusions of the debate will be sent to the government. The scientists and fishermen expect the government to resolutely protect the Adriatic, observing the International Convention on the Law of the Sea and taking into account Croatia's maritime orientation.

Davorin Rudolf, a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts, welcomed the government's decision to seek advice from experts before passing the maritime code.

Participants agreed that the government should use all the possibilities arising from the provisions of the International Convention on the Law of the Sea.
