PETRINJA, Aug 30 (Hina) - A memorial ceremony was held in Petrinja, about 50 kilometres southeast of Zagreb, on Monday to mark International Missing Persons Day and remember 1,189 persons who have been unaccounted for since the 1991-1995 war in Croatia.

The ceremony was organised by the Zagreb-based association of families of prisoners of war and missing soldiers "The Croatian Phoenix" and the federation of associations of families of prisoners of war and missing soldiers.

Assistant Veterans' Affairs Minister Ivan Grujic said that of 4,000 victims of war who had been exhumed 500 were still unidentified.

Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said that the problem of missing persons was Croatia's major humanitarian commitment. She announced that a special flag would soon be displayed in the Croatian Parliament in tribute to victims of the Homeland Defence War. "The flag will be removed only when we find out the truth about the last missing person and detainee," she added.

The event was also addressed by Natasa Kandic, executive director of the non-governmental Humanitarian Law Fund from Belgrade. "For the sake of the future and historical memory, we pledge to find out the truth about the fate of your loved ones," she said.

This was the first time someone from Serbia and Montenegro had addressed a gathering of this kind in Croatia.
