ZAGREB, Aug 26 (Hina) - Parliament President Vladimir Seks has said the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) might not nominate a candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections, Jutarnji List daily says in Friday's issue.

Seks said in an interview the possible failure of the presidential candidate could negatively affect the government's position.

He added the powers of the president of the republic were strictly defined and limited, and stressed the HDZ already had two leading officials in state authorities -- the prime minister and the parliament speaker.

Seks went on to say the HDZ must consider both state and party interests when nominating a presidential candidate, which he added called for being able to appraise how Croatia's democracy would be affected by having the PM, the parliament speaker and also the president of the republic come from the same party. He stressed that in the appraisal state interests were more important than party interests.

Asked if he would agree to a presidential nomination, Seks said everything must be weighed out and sensibly considered. He added the party would make a decision on the presidential candidate next month.
