ZAGREB, Aug 20 (Hina) - The ultrasound examination of axles of tilting trains, which the Croatian Railways company possesses, began on Friday, and the results of the tests will be known in early September.

The ultrasound examination, which is being carried out by the HZ daughter-company for the maintenance of engines, has been planned as a precautionary measure against the backdrop of the fact that a crack was spotted at an axle of a train of the VT 612 series in Germany (the same series of tilting trains as in Croatia).

Every day, one or two tilting trains will be examined but this will not cause the interruption of their service at the Zagreb-Split line, said the engines maintenance company's director, Mladen Niksic, on Friday.

The HZ has eight tilting trains, manufactured by the Bombardier Transportation company. The trains are under warranty and the Bombardier Transportation will notify the HZ next week if it will cover the cost of the examination, which is being carried out at the order of Transport Minister Bozidar Kalmeta.

Niksic recalled that the tilting trains in Germany were older and had so far passed a much higher number of kilometres, while those trains in Croatia were new and had to date passed between 10,000 and 12,000 kilometres.

It is recommended that a train of this kind be examined after it passes 480,000 kilometres, but the HZ will test them after they pass 60,000 kilometres.

In Germany, 150 tilting trains have so far been examined by ultrasound and no technical defect has been found, Niksic said.
