TRADE UNIONS SAY WILL NOT ALLOW FURTHER RESTRICTION OF WORKERS RIGHTS

ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina) - The leaders of six Croatian trade union federations have stated ahead of International Labour Day on May 1 that they will not tolerate any further restrictions of workers' rights.
ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina) - The leaders of six Croatian trade union federations have stated ahead of International Labour Day on May 1 that they will not tolerate any further restrictions of workers' rights.#L# In a joint leaflet the unions warn that workers' rights achieved by the union movement are threatened in many aspects because international capital and a merciless struggle for profit threaten workers' and human rights all around the world, with Croatian capitalists obediently following global trends. The unions and workers have no special reason to celebrate International Labour Day, especially as this year they have less rights than last year - the Labour Act has been amended to reduce severance pay and introduce shorter periods of notice, the unionists said at a news conference on Thursday. The celebration of Labour Day should be seen as a day of the struggle for real standards and against oppression and cheap labour, said the leader of the Alliance of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia, Vesna Dejanovic. The 114th Labour Day celebration in Zagreb's Maksimir park, the traditional venue of the event, will not be marked by the unity of the union federations as demonstrated over the past years. After last year's joint protests staged to mark International Labour Day, this year the unions will stage separate celebrations. The unions did not invite state officials to the celebrations, but it has been confirmed that President Stjepan Mesic and Vice Premier Jadranka Kosor will attend. (Hina) rml
