"Croatia must have a mobile, well-equipped and well-trained army for
the sake of defence. As long as it is not a NATO member, Croatia must
be ready for self-defence," Mesic said addressing officers and
conscripts at the centre.
In that context, Mesic noted that "a party which proposes that the
Serbian-Croatian border run along the Virovitica-Karlobag line has
won the elections in the neighbouring country".
The president commended the organisation of the Koprivnica centre,
stating that it met NATO standards in all aspects.
Commenting on cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal in The
Hague, Mesic said that "the Gotovina case will not slow down talks
with the European Union".
"Why should we hide only one man if all the others have gone to The
Hague," he added.
The president left Koprivnica for Krizevci where he attended
celebrations marking the town's day.
