WASHINGTON/NEW YORK, March 4 (Hina) - Croatia advocates the participation of women in the process of conflict prevention and resolution and peace building, Croatian representative Dubravka Simonovic told the UN Commission on the Status of Women on Wednesday, enumerating Croatia's achievements in these fields.#L# Simonovic advocated the setting up of mechanisms for gender equality which would supervise the implementation of UN documents on the equal position of women. The 48th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women is dedicated to the role of men in achieving gender equality and the role of women in achieving and maintaining peace. Speaking about Croatia's achievements, Simonovic said that after the November 2003 parliamentary election, women accounted for 17.76 percent of MPs. She added that the percentage of female ministers in the Ivo Sanader government increased from 20 to 28.6 percent. The legal framework for achieving gender equality was strengthened with the adoption of the Gender Equality Law and the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence, said Simonovic, who heads the Croatian Foreign Ministry's Human Rights Department. Speaking about measures aimed at strengthening gender equality in Croatia, Simonovic said the government had appointed an ombudsman for gender equality and was setting up an office which would deal with that issue.
