During Thursday's debate in parliament on amendments to the state
budget, Finance Minister Ivan Suker said the HSP-sponsored amendments
regarding the compensation to Esuli was included in the
government-sponsored amendment to the final law on the budget
execution.
The HSP was satisfied with the government's explanation and the party
is expected to support the 2004 state budget.
Under an agreement between Italy and the former Yugoslav federation,
Croatia should compensate the Italian refugees in the amount of US35
million.
On behalf of the government, Minister Suker dismissed an amendment
submitted ny Antun Kapraljevic of the Croatian People's Party who
asked that 3.4 million kuna of budgetary funds be earmarked for the
functioning of the conflict of interest commission. Suker said the
government would finance the work of the commission with funds from
the current reserves, as soon as conditions for that were created.
Kapraljevic did not accept Suker's explanation, asking of the MPs to
either support his amendment or dissolve the commission.
Also dismissed were amendments submitted by Milanka Opacic and Gordana
Sobol of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) who sought more funds for
the government's office for geneder equality and expert training of
employees in the state administration.
