ZAGREB, Feb 26 (Hina) - Branko Sostaric, a professor at Zagreb's Faculty of Veterinary Science and expert on bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), said at a news conference organised by the Democratic Centre (DC) party on Thursday
that there was no danger of "mad cow" disease in Croatia, as Croatia was among countries where the presence of this disease had not been proven and where the risk of its incidence was very low.

The disease should not be used as a pretext for banning imports, as
this would constitute a violation of EU standards, and all of this
could have undesirable consequences for Croatia, DC representatives
told reporters.
If the import of some meat does not suit the country for economic
reasons, then this position should be defended with real arguments
rather than using BSE to justify the ban. Besides, all the necessary
measures for full consumer protection have been in effect in Croatia
for several years, DC officials said.
