Military ordinary Juraj Jezerinac entrusted this service to Vinko
Maslac of the Society of Jesus who was made a chaplain at a mass in
the Croatian Army Home "Zvonimir" in Zagreb today.
The establishment of the Military Chaplain's Office is important as it
reflects the further development of the defence system, said the
military chief-of-staff, General Josip Lucic, in his capacity as
defence minister's envoy.
He said that after the war, the 14-year-old defence system was still
developing, aware of its role in the establishment of freedom and
education in peace.
Lucic said the Croatian army needed fresh strength, faith and
optimism, namely spiritual renewal to move forward. He recalled that
all who had been in the war bore both visible and invisible marks,
including grave psychological suffering. He added, however, that
spiritual values had given them strength during the war, providing the
foundations on which Croatia's freedom and independence was achieved.
Monsignor Jezerinac said the military chaplain would provide Christian
teaching.
