BELGRADE, Feb 4(Hina) - The Serbian Assembly on Wednesday elected
Dragan Marsicanin of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) as chairman
of the Assembly.#L#
Marsicanin won the support of 128 out of 245 deputies, including those
of the Socialist Party (SPS) of Slobodan Milosevic, while 36 members
of the Democratic Party abstained. The post was contested by Gordana
Pop Lazic of the Radical Party, who gained 81 votes.
The chairman of the SPS main board, Ivica Dacic, told reporters before
the session that the 22 representatives of his party in the Assembly
would support the DSS candidate if that party publicly announced that
it would not negotiate with the Democratic Party of Boris Tadic and
Zoran Zivkovic on forming a government.
The DSS issued a statement on Wednesday morning saying that a minority
government would be formed and that negotiations would begin after the
election of chairman of the Assembly.
The newly-elected chairman of the Assembly will at the same time
perform the duties of acting president of the state, because three
presidential elections have failed due to a low voter turnout.
The constituent session continued with the election of Assembly bodies
and forming of clubs of deputies.
