ZAGREB, Feb 2(Hina) - The national Institute for the Protection of
Nature, which was recently integrated into the Ministry of Culture,
presented its projects marking World Wetlands Day, February 2, at a
news conference on Monday.#L#
Eugen Draganovic, head of the institute's department for the
protection of nature, said that Croatia was rich in wetlands, from
mountain lakes, rivers and creeks to flatland swamps, deltas and salt
water coastal ponds.
World Wetlands Day is marked to recall the obligation to preserve and
economically use this valuable natural resource, Draganovic said.
World Wetlands Day marks the date of the signing of the Convention on
Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar.
The convention has been signed by 138 countries to date, including
Croatia, and it binds every signatory to preserve wetlands on its
territory.
