JELSA, Jan 7 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic handed on Wednesday 555 books and three collections of Croatian literature on CD-rom to the library in Jelsa on the island of Hvar which burned down on November 10.#L# The library in Jelsa, established 135 years ago, is one of the oldest on southern Croatia's islands. The books were collected as part of the Book for a Friend drive, launched at Mesic's office on December 13. Mesic said today tourism must become Croatia's main economic branch, not just one of the most important ones, and called for attracting foreign investments. "In doing so we mustn't become guests in our own home, which is why we need to protect the most valuable national treasure and seek partners with whom we can jointly benefit." Asked to comment on his election as Foreign Person of 2003 by the readers of Bosnia's Dnevni avaz daily, Mesic said he was probably chosen because of his position that Bosnia must not be partitioned, as changes of borders were not possible in Europe unless to the damage of others. Mesic was also asked for a comment on Bosnian Civil Affairs Minister Safet Halilovic's reaction to Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's statement about the building of a bridge from the Croatian mainland to the peninsula of Peljesac, which Halilovic felt pressurised Bosnia to accept any terms regarding an accord between the two countries on Croatia's passage through Bosnia's Neum area and Bosnia's use of the Croatian seaport of Ploce. Mesic said the building of the bridge must not be used for political purposes, and that more transport connections could only benefit cooperation. (Hina) ha
