ZAGREB, Jan 5 (Hina) - The government on Monday took note of a report
on the situation in buffer stocks, which was drawn up in June, and
bound the economy ministry to prepare a new report and propose
measures by the end of this month.#L#
Economy, Labour and Entrepreneurship Minister Branko Vukelic recalled
the June report pointed to a spate of irregularities in buffer stocks,
and that in October the Buffer Stocks Council warned that stockpiles
were inadequate.
Buffer stocks were used but not refilled, and the former government
did not address this issue, Vukelic said.
The new government underlined the fact that the Buffer Stocks
Management claimed 1.2 billion kuna (EUR158 million) and that the
amount was being collected via some 600 court and some 150 bankruptcy
proceedings. Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said the matter needed to be
probed thoroughly.
The new government learned about the problems with the buffer stocks
almost by accident, while preparing relief for the victims of the
recent Iran earthquake, when it was discovered that goods strategic
for disaster relief were lacking.
The government formally concluded today that tents, blankets and
sleeping bags should be sent to Iran.
