One in three Croatian school children exposed to peer violence via Internet or mobile phone

ZAGREB, March 23 (Hina) - Croatian children who experience some form of electronic violence are mostly exposed to violence via Facebook and SMS messages, according to a survey conducted by UNICEF among 8,000 school children, their parents and 800 teachers in 23 primary schools throughout Croatia.

As for school children who are exposed to acts of violence two, three or more times monthly, 40 percent of them experience violence via Facebook or other social networking services and websites, and 30 percent experience violence via text messages, according to the findings of the survey presented in Zagreb on Wednesday.

Broken down by gender, both girls and boys are equally exposed to various types of electronic violence.

Five percent of victims are repeatedly affected by electronic violence, 29 percent of victims have sporadic experiences of that kind and 66 percent of those polled said that they had never been exposed to e-violence, said the survey's author Jasenka Pregrad, adding that these figures were in a high correlation with non-electronic violence.

As many as 96 percent of school children have a mobile phone and a computer, and 84 percent have access to the Internet.
