Croatia applauds Karzai's decision on transition of security from int'l forces to Afghans

ZAGREB, March 22 (Hina) - Croatia welcomes the decision of Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai to see to it that Afghan institutions start gradually taking over a leading role in providing for the safety and security of their country, Croatia's Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The beginning of this transition process is a clear indicator of the success of the strategy in Afghanistan and shows that invested efforts have produced results. Being engaged in the international mission in that country, Croatia is also a part of that success, according to the statement.

The announced transition does not mean the immediate withdrawal of all international forces from Afghanistan, but it can be expected to facilitate the gradual reduction of the international military presence in that south-central Asian country. This is a process that will require the continuation of assistance to the Afghan forces in developing their capabilities and providing permanent and sustainable security in their country.

By participating in the ISAF mission, established by the United Nations Security Council on 20 December 2001 following the call of the Afghan government, Croatia strongly supports the process of transition through activities of training of Afghan security forces. A larger part of the Croatian ISAF contingent is focused on training the Afghan army and police. Croatia will continue directing its efforts to this key segment, reads the statement.

The ISAF mission demonstrates the firm commitment of the international community to and its unity in establishing sustainable security and stability in Afghanistan.

The Afghan government has set the goal of enabling local institutions to assume a leading role in providing for security throughout Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Being a NATO member and participant in the ISAF mission, Croatia welcomes this ambition, the ministry's statement concludes.

Afghanistan's leader Karzai announced on Tuesday that several areas would be included in the first phase of a gradual transition of security from NATO troops to Afghan forces in July, including volatile cities in the south and north.
