The Rijeka County Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Friday it had requested that the case be awarded to another judge.
According to unofficial sources, a retrial could take place at another court considering the lack of available judges in Gospic.
Earlier this month Gospic County Court Judge Branko Milanovic acquitted Joso Mraovic, 57, of rape of 28-year-old U.S. citizen Ilisha Jarett, a former basketball player for Gospic-Industrogradnja.
The judge's statement of reasons for the decision has attracted severe criticism from the media.
