ZAGREB, Dec 15 (Hina) - The Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) Programmes Council on Thursday moved initiating procedure to establish the responsibility of Denis Latin for breaching programmes principles and obligations in his talk-show "Latinica" of December 12 which dealt with Franjo Tujdman's political legacy.

With eight votes for, one vote against and one abstention, the Council concluded that the controversial broadcast had violated programmes principles and obligations as defined by the HRT Law and the Media Law.

The Council bound the HRT manager, Croatian Television (HTV) manager, HTV programmes director, and the head of the variety department to inform the public of the measures taken in 15 days.

It also called on the programmes leadership to take care, especially in shows such as "Latinica", of professionalism and to analyse relevant topics from Croatia's recent past.

The Council discussed topics that were the subject of heated debates in the parliament in the last two days, when most deputies fiercely criticised the national broadcaster, one of the reasons being also "Latinica".

HRT manager Mirko Galic said that well-founded objections to reports on the network's programmes and financial policies should be taken into consideration. The fact that the parliament discussed the reports two days, without reaching a consensus, shows that the HRT lacks conditions to operate as a public broadcaster, Galic said.

The editor-in-chief of the news department, Vladimir Roncevic, said the parliamentary debate was not on the agenda because the parliament should have focused on the programmes and financial reports of the national broadcaster. Roncevic believes that "Latinica" was only a pretext to exert pressure on the HRT.
