Jody Williams, ambassador for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, thanked Croatia for organising the conference, which was held under the auspices of the foreign ministry.
The ministry's advisor on anti-mine activity, Dijana Plestina, said future priorities included urging as many countries as possible to sign the Ottawa Convention, demining, destroying mine stockpiles and helping mine victims.
The chief of the International Committee of the Red Cross department on anti-mine activity in Geneva, Peter Herby, said that landmines killed more civilians than soldiers and caused more wounds than military doctors ever see.
The Zagreb event was attended by about 700 envoys from signatory countries and nongovernmental organisations. This was the first time the Ottawa Convention countries met in Europe outside Geneva.
