Ex JNA pilot testifies in Lora war crimes trial

SPLIT, Oct 26 (Hina) - Another two witnesses from Serbia-Montenegro testified in the Lora war crimes trial before the Split County Court on Wednesday.

Today's witnesses were Dragomir Miljkovic, who was detained in the Lora prison in Split in 1992 on suspicion that he as a civilian had planned terrorist attacks in the coastal city, and Goran Pantic, a former Yugoslav Air Force pilot, who was arrested when his plane was shot down in April 1992 near Capljina, southern Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Their testimony was similar as those given by previous four prosecution witnesses from Serbia-Montenegro on Monday and Tuesday.

Miljkovic and Pantic spoke about the torture they were had been subjected to while in detention in Lora.

Asked by a judge whether he could recognise any of the abusers among the indictees present in the court room, Pantic pointed the finger at Ante Gudic, Andjelko Botic and Tonci Vrkic, citing their names. He added that Vrkic treated him less cruelly than others and that the most cruel person was Tomislav Duic, former head of the prison who is being tried in absentia.

Pantic also said that he had seen from his cell how Nenad Knezevic had been beaten up.

The indictees, eight former military policemen, are charged with war crimes against civilians, including the murder of civilians Nenad Knezevic and Gojko Bulovic in the prison.

Speaking about Knezevic, Pantic said that he saw guards beating Knezevic, after he was wounded during an unsuccessful attempt to escape from the prison. According to Pantic's testimony, first he heard someone being beaten and some voices which he recognised as the voice of Emilio Bungur, also one of indictees who is now on the run. Then Pantic climbed higher on the wall to look through the window and saw Bungur, Gudic and Botic beating Knezevic.

Responding to a question from defence teams and Presiding Judge Spomenka Tonkovic, Pantic said that he could say exactly where his cell had been, from which he had seen Knezevic being tortured.

Dragomir Miljkovic, who was detained in Lora in August 1992, said he had been an ordinary employee of a restaurant in Split when he was arrested on a charge of preparing terrorist attacks against Croatia.

Miljkovic claims that he was detained in the Lora prison because some military policemen wanted to take his flat, which he said was why they falsely accused him of possessing a hidden hand grenade and of planning terrorist attacks.

He said he had been very brutally tortured in the prison, but noted that he could not recognise any of the present indictees.

"I have never seen them in my life," Miljkovic said, adding that he heard from other inmates about the murdered civilians Nenad Knezevic and Gojko Bulovic.

In 1993, Miljkovic was acquitted of planning terrorist attacks, after which he moved to Serbia.
