ZAGREB, Nov 11 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Friday received NATO Deputy Secretary General Alessandro Minuto Rizzo, Mesic's office said in a press release.

Mesic said Croatia had three strategic goals -- joining the European Union, joining NATO, and ensuring a better life to Croatian citizens.

Speaking of results achieved through the reform of the Armed Forces in preparations for accession to NATO, Mesic highlighted the reduction of the number of soldiers and restructuring. He said that although much had been done, additional efforts should be invested in areas where the desired results had not been achieved.

Minuto Rizzo applauded the efforts Croatia had made and was making to meet NATO membership criteria. He said the alliance was willing to help Croatia in areas in which it needed help.

He underlined that the invitation to join and accession depended on current as well as future results in reforms.

Minuto Rizzo said Croatia played a very important and positive role in the region because of reforms undertaken to join NATO and the European Union, which he added contributed to the stabilisation and development of Southeast Europe.
