ROGATEC, Nov 10 (Hina) - Municipalities along the Croatian-Slovene border have exceptionally good neighbourly relations and cooperation and should serve as an example for overall relations between Croatia and Slovenia, Slovene President Janez Drnovsek said in Rogatec, Slovenia, on Thursday.

Drnovsek made the statement while opening a meeting with the heads of municipalities and towns along the Croatian-Slovene border. The meeting in Rogatec, which was also attended by Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, marked the end of an informal meeting of the two heads of state that started behind closed doors in the Croatian border village of Miljana earlier in the afternoon.

The meeting of the two presidents with local officials from border municipalities was proposed by Drnovsek at his first informal meeting with Mesic in Bizeljsko in March.

"The good neighbourly relations here serve as an example of constructive thinking and good cooperation," Drnovsek said at the start of the meeting.

He reiterated that the two countries did not share only problems regarding the sea border, but that they should also focus on positive aspects of their relations, which he said were numerous.

The promotion of a good neighbourly atmosphere is the purpose of the meeting with local officials, Drnovsek said, adding he hoped the atmosphere of cooperation in border areas would spread to overall relations between the two countries.

He was backed by President Mesic who said that people living in the border area shared similar problems.

Mesic called on the local officials to present concrete examples which deepened their cooperation with officials on the other side of the border, as well as possible problems, and expressed hope that the present border between the two countries would be abolished in the future.
