ATHENS, Nov 8 (Hina) - Croatian controversial businessman Hrvoje Petrac, who is detained in an extradition prison in Greece, told Reuters on Tuesday he did not know the whereabouts of Croatian war crimes fugitive Ante Gotovina.

Petrac is seen as an important link in a network of people helping the general who has been on the run since the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague indicted him in July 2001.

The tycoon told Reuters he had talked with two Hague tribunal officials who offered him freedom in exchange of information about Gotovina.

"They promised a lot if I would speak about Gotovina," Petrac told a Reuters reporter at the Greek Supreme Court. "That I would be free everywhere. I don't know where he is."

Petrac, 50, was arrested in the Greek port Igoumenitsa on August 31 for bearing a fake passport and on the basis of an Interpol warrant. He had been on the run since the February 2004 kidnapping of a Croatian general's underage son.

Croatia seeks his extradition based on a Zagreb County Court ruling which sentenced him to six years in jail for inciting the abduction.

The local court on the Greek island of Corfu approved the extradition, but Petrac's lawyers lodged an appeal on which the Greek Supreme Court is now expected to rule. A hearing scheduled for today was postponed until a Croatian interpreter is found. The final decision on Petrac's extradition will be made by the Greek justice minister.

Petrac has applied for political asylum in Greece but the authorities have not made a decision yet.

He was sentenced to five months in jail or a 1,500 euro fine for illegally entering Greece and bearing a fake passport. A decision on the appeal against the sentence has not been made yet either.
