BRUSSELS, Nov 8 (Hina) - The European Union and Croatia on Tuesday started screening Croatia's competition policy to see to what extent it was adjusted to the acquis communautaire.

Competition policy is the fourth of the 35 negotiating chapters opened since the EU decided to start accession talks with Croatia. The screening of seven such chapters will have begun by the end of this year.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, European Commission officials will be explaining relevant EU laws to representatives of Croatia and Turkey, which both started membership talks on 3 October.

Croatia has nearly finalised a legislative framework for competition policy, but since the acquis communautaire is changing all the time, the need for new adjustments is not ruled out.

Competition policy includes anti-trust policy and control of government subsidies. Rules governing market competition are directly enforced in the territory of the EU and all member states are required to fully cooperate with the European Commission in complying with those rules.
