ZAGREB, Oct 28 (Hina) - From 1985 to the end of 2004, 483 HIV-infected persons were registered in Croatia, of whom 221 developed AIDS and 122 died, members of the government said while discussing a report on measures to fight HIV/AIDS at a session on Friday.

The government also adopted a national programme for the prevention of HIV/AIDS until 2010, the main objective of the programme being to keep the low level of HIV/AIDS infection and diseases.

With four infected persons per one million residents Croatia is among countries with an extremely low incidence of AIDS, Health Minister Neven Ljubicic said.

In 2004, 175,700 HIV tests were performed and 104 were positive for HIV, which is 0.06 percent, Ljubicic said.

Eleven people developed AIDS last year.

In Croatia AIDS is registered exclusively in increased risk groups and is dominant in homosexual and bisexual male communities.

The minister recalled that last year saw two cases of HIV infection caused by blood transfusion. He added that blood transfusion was safe because blood was tested for HIV and that all other measures were

being taken to prevent blood donation by persons with increased risk of HIV infection.

The minister said that the government had set aside 34.3 million kuna in 2004 for HIV/AIDS prevention programmes, and close to 40 million in 2005, which was almost twice the amount set aside in 2002.

The government asked the parliament to confirm a 31 million euro loan by the World Bank for a project of development of the social welfare system.
