ISTANBUL, Oct 20 (Hina) - Dialogue between churches is a precondition for dialogue between European peoples, and lack of such dialogue leads to confrontation, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in Istanbul on Thursday.

"Dialogue is of great importance for Europe's future. I believe that the European People's Party is doing a very important job for the future, and if there was no such dialogue, misunderstandings would be more frequent," said Sanader, who is attending the 9th Dialogue on Interreligious Cooperation, organised by the European People's Party and the Orthodox Church.

"We want a Europe without confrontations, there was enough confrontation in the past. We want a Europe of cooperation," the Croatian PM said.

The recent start of Croatia's and Turkey's EU entry talks is good news for the entire region and not only for the two countries, Sanader said.

"Full normalisation of relations is a precondition for a stable and peaceful future of this part of the world. That is why the start of Croatia's accession talks is good news not only for my country but for all others as well," Sanader said in a speech on the development of civil society as a new foundation of Southeast Europe.

The Croatian PM met in Istanbul with a member of the Bosnian state presidency, Sulejman Tihic, announcing that he would visit Sarajevo by the end of the year and meet Prime Minister Adnan Terzic and members of the three-man state presidency.

Sanader said he hoped Bosnia-Herzegovina would get a positive opinion from the European Commission on the start of talks on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement.

Although he was scheduled to arrive in Istanbul, Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica did not attend the event because he is preparing for a visit to New York, where talks on the final status of Kosovo are to start at the United Nations.

Sanader announced Kostunica's visit to Croatia for mid-November.
