NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Hina) - There is a growing awareness that Croatia is doing all it can in its cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal and EU countries are close to reaching a consensus on Croatia's full cooperation, Croatia's Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said in New York on Wednesday.

Grabar-Kitarovic met on the fringes of the UN General Assembly session with a number of her colleagues from and outside the European Union to discuss the need for full cooperation with the Hague tribunal as a condition for Croatia to start membership talks with the EU.

She met British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, whose country is chairing the EU, and informed him that Croatia was making maximum efforts in its cooperation with the tribunal.

"It is my impression that there is an awareness that Croatia has made concrete progress in implementing the Action Plan, that the attitude towards Croatia is improving and that we are nearing a consensus on the matter," the minister told Hina.

Grabar-Kitarovic met Montenegrin Foreign Minister Miodrag Vlahovic, with whom she discussed Montenegro's initiative to pay compensation for war damage caused to Dubrovnik during the Serbian-Montenegrin aggression.

"We have welcomed the initiative regarding the payment of compensation for the livestock (taken from the Dubrovnik area by Serbian-Montenegrin forces) and the possibility of cooperation between Dubrovnik and Tivat airports," Grabar-Kitarovic said, adding that efforts to solve the issue of compensation should be continued on the level of experts.

Grabar-Kitarovic said that her Montenegrin counterpart had emphasised the moral responsibility for the Montenegrin aggression on Dubrovnik and his government's determination to work on reconciliation and good neighbourly relations with Croatia.

Grabar-Kitarovic said that Croatia supported the peaceful resolution of relations between Serbia and Montenegro.

During her visit to New York, the Croatian minister lobbied for Croatia's non-permanent membership of the Security Council in the 2008-2009 mandate.

Speaking of the results of her lobbying activities, she said she believed that Croatia's position was good.

The minister yesterday also met Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai, and the two officials agreed that there was a need to sign bilateral agreements to boost economic cooperation, especially in tourism.

They also spoke about the sixth meeting on the implementation of the convention banning land mines, to be hosted by Croatia, which in the next year chairs the convention as successor to Thailand.
