PULA, Oct 18 (Hina) - Istria County prefect Ivan Jakovcic said in
Pula on Tuesday he expected the government to accept the membership of Istria
and Primorje-Gorski Kotar counties in a future Euroregion which would also
include Italy's Veneto and Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Austria's Carinthia, and
future Slovene regions. Representatives of said regions discussed
the establishment of the Euroregion in Udine, Italy, yesterday and adopted a
draft statement of intentions which state bodies are expected to adopt so that
the statement could be formulated and signed within 60 days.
Jakovcic said the future Euroregion would be characterised by the
territorial and historical connection of its members.
Yesterday he also met Austrian politician Joerg Heider, proposing that
Istria's experience and concept of protection of minorities' rights be applied
in the creation of the new Euroregion.
