The British Times newspaper reports on its web site that "a letter bomb exploded in the post room of the British embassy in the Croatian capital of Zagreb today, injuring one member of staff."
"No-one has claimed responsibility and it is not believed that a specific threat was received. Eyewitnesses said there was no visible damage to the embassy building, on the edge of Zagreb's commercial centre. Although the device was small, the bomb has heightened fears of growing unrest in the region following several years of calm after the end of the former Yugoslav republic's war of independence in 1995," the newspaper reported.
The Al Jazeera also reported on its web site about the blast in the British Embassy in Zagreb, saying that no-one has claimed responsibility.
In March, a number of Western embassies in Zagreb, as well as some offices of several international institutions, received threatening letters, which diplomats said were probably related to the growing anti-European Union sentiment, reported The Times, Al Jazeera and the British news agency Reuters.
The foreign media recall that the European Union postponed the start of entry talks with Zagreb in March, citing its failure to fully cooperate with the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
"The delay triggered a fall in popular support for joining the Union. Croatia hopes to start membership talks by the end of this year after stepping up efforts to locate fugitive general Ante Gotovina, indicted by the tribunal in 2001 and in hiding since then. He is seen as a war hero by many Croats," the Reuters reported.
The France Presse reported that the British Embassy in Croatia has been a target of severe criticism in some Croatian papers over the tough British position towards Zagreb's cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal.
The device that exploded in the post-room of the British Embassy at 07.00 am Monday wounded a Croatian national working at the embassy. The man sustained injuries to his shin.
The embassy asked the local police for help and Zagreb police in cooperation with British representatives are conducting an investigation.
The area where the embassy is located was cordoned off and security measures were stepped up.
