ZAGREB, Sept 8 (Hina) - The first resident Israeli ambassador to Zagreb, Shmuel Meirom presented his credentials to Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Thursday.

Mesic and Meirom agreed that the opening of the Israeli Embassy in Zagreb was a key moment in relations between the two countries since 1997 when they established diplomatic ties.

The Croatian head of state added that the two countries had much in common, citing the fact that both countries are small and that both gained independence through blood, tears and sweat.

Commenting on Croatia's aspirations to become a European Union member, the Israeli diplomat said his country would do all it could to support those aspirations.

Meirom described Mesic's visit to Israel this March on the occasion of the opening of the new Yad Vashem museum as crucial for the promotion of the relations between the Israeli and Croatian nations.

This was yet another confirmation of your readiness to face black shadows from the past and open a new page in our bilateral relations, the Israeli ambassador said.

He added that his mission would be to further promote "excellent relations that already exist between our two countries in all fields".

President Mesic described the decision of the Israeli government to open its embassy in Zagreb as "evident confirmation of a high level which the Croatian-Israeli relations have reached".

"Place your trust in us who speak on behalf of the democratic Croatia founded on the tenets of anti-fascism, although you will probably occasionally register different tones somewhere on the margins. Even if there are individuals and minor groups seeking models where they should not be sought and claiming that they would like to build a future, although they are slaves to the past, they are not typical of the present-day Croatia," President Mesic said.
