BANJA LUKA, Aug 30 (Hina) - The parliament of the Bosnian Serb entity on Tuesday passed a decision transferring powers from the area of defence to bodies and institutions on the state level.

This decision marks the start of changes to Bosnia's laws regulating defence and the armed forces.

The decision was adopted with 61 votes for, ten votes against and three abstentions, which means that more than two-thirds of deputies supported the reform of the defence system in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The National Assembly of Republika Srpska also adopted conclusions stating that proposed solutions regarding the functioning of the country's armed forces met NATO standards and represented the final stage in the establishment of forces compatible with NATO.

Republika Srpska President Dragan Cavic said the defence reform represented "a break with the time period between 1990 and 1995 and the end of exerting political control over the armed forces".

Cavic said that in the future Bosnia-Herzegovina would have three regiments - Serb, Muslim and Croat, which would be armed with weapons meeting NATO standards.
