BELGRADE, Aug 25 (Hina) - The President of Serbia-Montenegro, Svetozar Marovic, will on 9 September officially meet the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, in his summer residence Castel Gandolfo, Marovic's office stated on Thursday.

The Serbian news agency Tanjug also reported that Serbian President Boris Tadic is due to visit the pontiff on 29 September. Tadic's office, however, could not yet confirm this report.

Friday's issue of the Belgrade-based Vecernje Novosti daily reports that Tadic will meet with Benedict XVI and other Roman Catholic dignitaries in the Vatican for talks on the promotion of bilateral relations which the two sides describe as improving.

The Apostolic Nuncio to Serbia-Montenegro, Eugenio Sbarbaro, told Tanjug in April this year that at the time when he was a cardinal, Joseph Ratzinger in January this year had expressed his intention to visit Belgrade "in order to deepen the cooperation between the Roman Catholic and Serb Orthodox Churches."

In the past, announcements of plans for visits by the pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church to Belgrade were not welcomed by the leaders of the Serb Orthodox Church.
