ZAGREB, Aug 25 (Hina) - Representatives of the Croatian Science, Education and Sports Ministry and of the Serb community agreed on Thursday that all children in Croatia, regardless of their ethnic background, would learn history from the same approved history books.

The ministry will create conditions for history classes in the Croatian Danube region and other multiethnic areas to be based on textbooks which enable the system of education to operate as a unified system and which meet the highest standards in the field, Minister Dragan Primorac said after meeting Serb representatives Milorad Pupovac, Vojislav Stanimirovic, Cedomir Visnjic and Jovan Ajdukovic.

Primorac said that as of next school year history would be taught from new textbooks that were adjusted to the national education standards. He added that additional teaching materials about recent history would be completed and that they would be used by history teachers as reference books.

The minister and the Serb officials agreed that work should be continued on textbook materials and reference teaching materials that are to be adjusted to the national education standards and latest achievements in history science. Those materials will be used by history teachers throughout Croatia and they will have a key role in achieving full reintegration through the education system, Primorac said.

Today's meeting contributes to the successful completion of the peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danube region and the strengthening of patriotic feelings among all students, the two sides agreed.

There is only one version of Croatia's history and it must be presented in an honest, fair and objective manner, Primorac said adding that Croatia had entered a stage of serious maturity and integration with the EU.

Asked about the application of an appendix to history textbooks regarding recent history, Primorac said the appendix was not a textbook and that it was being revised, although it did not exist as an official document until approved by the Ministry.
