OSIJEK, July 27 (Hina) - Greenpeace's first major action in Croatia began in the eastern city of Osijek on Wednesday with the arrival of the ship "Anna" and an exhibition on climate changes, the dangers of nuclear energy and the advantages of renewable energy sources.

The "Anna" has been sailing down the Danube since May as part of the Energy Revolution 2005 European campaign, which has also been launched in Southeast Asia and Greenland. On Thursday, the Greenpeace activists will visit Vukovar.

In Croatia, the Greenpeace action is being implemented by the Green Action and Green Osijek associations.

Greenpeace's expert on renewable energy sources Jan Haverkamp told the press, among other things, that countries of Central Europe, including Croatia, should invest in new plants for the production of electricity.

Green Action representative Toni Vidan said this association and Green Osijek, with Greenpeace's support, demanded that the government urgently ratify the Kyoto Protocol, withdraw from the Druzba Adria oil transport project, and launch a national programme for the development of renewable energy sources and energy effectiveness.

Vidan said that although the European Union's official goal was to make renewable energy sources account for 12 per cent of overall energy production by 2010, the Croatian government did not accept even the 4.9 per cent share, which he added showed that the national oil and power supply companies INA and HEP had an excessive influence on government policy.

Vidan also said it was disgraceful that Croatia was the only European country which had not ratified the Kyoto Protocol.
